An Inventure Expedition is not a safari, but a true journey “back to the rhythm” in Tanzania, where the first humans on earth emerged. It is a special trip for a small group of inventurers who want to reinvent their lives for vital aging in the second half. Inventure treks offer a great chance to get back to the basics of being on foot and to experience hiking in wilderness environments. This trip also offers a chance for inventuring at a private camp setup on a fairly remote and undeveloped part of the Indian Ocean shore.
This trip will take a provocative look at who we are and who we may become in the second half of our lives. It will be a true adventure where the new worlds we see will reveal elements in ourselves that we never knew existed. Isak Dinesen summed this journey up in
Out Of Africa,
“You woke up in the morning and thought: Here I am, where I need to be.”

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Who goes on Inventure Expeditions?

2. What experience do I need?
The trip is designed to be enjoyed by men and women of any level of experience, from novice to expert. No previous experience is necessary except an open spirit and a curious mind.
3. How old should I be to go on this trip?
Anywhere from 40 to 80 years old. This trip is a personal renewal odyssey.
4. How fit do I need to be?
You should plan to come in sound health and good hiking condition. Hiking 3-10 miles a day over varied terrain is common.
5. What will the weather be like?
The trip is planned to coincide with the best weather conditions in Tanzania. Dry 80-85 degree weather with occasional heavy rain is common. Evenings are cool at higher elevations.
6. What about seeing wildlife?
A primary goal of the trip is to allow us to make close viewing contact with the remarkable birds and animals of East Africa. Wildlife and bird viewing is superb! In order to see the best wildlife, you will spend time in Land Rovers off roads. This means that dust, in large quantities, will be part of your diet on safari.
7. Do we get to visit the local people?
Traveling through non-tourist areas introduces us to some of the most friendly, peaceful and fascinating people in the world. Our guides coach us on customs, history and language.
8. What is the “inventure” part of the trip?
Fireside chats provide opportunities to deepen perspective on life and work questions. Daily solo time provides the chance to reflect and learn things about yourself that go unnoticed in the stress of daily life. Pre-trek reading and self-study provide a catalyst for fireside chats.
9. What will I need?
You are expected to provide your own clothes, rain gear and a good pair of hiking shoes.
10. What are the accommodations?
This is a camping safari. Accommodations range from occasional rustic lodges to remote camping areas. Campsites and meals are carefully tended to by an experienced camp team.
11. What is the cost?
The average cost on an expedition is $7,000 depending on the exact itinerary. This includes all fees, lodges, food, leaders and permits. Airfare is separate. You are responsible for the cost of personal equipment, passports, visa, gratuities and personal purchases.
“I was working in a high-stress, less-than-fulfilling job, when I started thinking about a second half of life that would really satisfy me. At the same time, I began making plans to take some time off. Then suddenly it occurred to me—I need a personal odyssey—an adventure plus an inventure. And from Africa my second half dream was born.”
